Abstract

The recent growth of data intensive multimedia-based web applications have not only sustained the need for more efficient ways to encode signals and images, but have made compression of such signals central to storage and communication technology. For still image compression, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) [1] standard has been established by International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Electro-Technical Commission (IEC). The performance of these coders generally degrades at low bit-rates mainly because of the underlying block-based Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) [2] scheme.

The proposed work explores the design and development of variable quantization DCT based image compression algorithm for embedded system applications. The performance of such algorithm is measured in terms of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Compression Ratio (CR) by considering variety of images such as gray scale, color images along with bio-medical images. The algorithm discussed here facilitates the image compression through variable quantization DCT for diverse usage.
